Indonesian online farmer’s market Sikumis plants new business direction

The e-commerce platform for agribusiness aims to simplify distribution chain for agricultural commodity
Bekasi-based agribusiness e-commerce platform Sikumis announced it has pivoted its business direction. Previously dabbling in B2B as an e-commerce platform offering industrial products and equipment for farms and fisheries, the company now focusses on offering a B2B and B2C online marketplace for farming, fishery, and agriculture-based small businesses. The startup cited the pivot as ‘the best decision’ moving forward. It also launched the ‘#gerakanpetanimodern’ (#ModernFarmersMovement) campaign with the goal to circumvent the agricultural commodity distribution chain which is believed to be the most pressing issue in Indonesia’s agricultural sector. “Hopefully the #gerakanpetanimodern campaign will help us achieve one of our goals to cut off food distribution chain on a national level, and to improve the livelihood of Indonesian farmers and fishermen. It will eventually lead to more young Indonesians working in farming, fishery, and agribusiness; allow us to achieve food sovereignty; and to win competition in ASEAN Economic Community,” according to a statement by Sikumis as quoted by Daily Social.

Products on Sikumis’ platform are being divided into seven categories: Farming, Forestry & Plantation, Livestock, Fishery & Marine, Ecology & Parks, Books, Softwares & Training, Agricultural Instruments & Infrastructure. In the future, Sikumis plans to expand its features by adding online kiosks, online commodity auction, price barometer, and a mobile app that connects customers to farmers, fishermen, and small business owners in their area. It also plans to allow customers to announce ‘vacancy’ for farmers or fishermen to become a supplier for their business (hotels, restaurants, etc.). The startup is a part of holding group PT. Sabas Sinergi Indonesia.
